what to expect from your procedure
The day prior to surgery, you will get a call from one of the center’s nurses.
This call will cover your arrival time, day-of preparations and answer any questions you may have. Please pay particular attention to the instructions regarding medications and diet restrictions. In almost all cases, this will mean nothing to eat or drink after midnight. If you do not receive a phone call by 3 pm or have additional questions, please call the center at 434 293 4995.
the day of your surgery
Before You Arrive:
– You will be asked to arrive 1 or 1.5 hours early, depending on surgery type. (This gives us time for registration and pre-operative preparation.)
– Bring your photo ID and insurance information.
– Leave any valuables and jewelry at home.
– Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that will slide easily over any surgical dressings.
When You Arrive:
- Registration first!
At the front desk, we will confirm your essentials like your name, birthdate and procedure. - Get changed and get comfortable.
After obtaining your weight and vital signs, we’ll escort you to a preoperative area where you change into procedure-appropriate clothing. If you desire, your family and friends are welcome to accompany you. - Review your details.
A nurse will join you to confirm your medical history, allergies and scheduled procedure. - Meet your team.
A specialist will place your IV, and you’ll say hello to members of your OR team. This includes the anesthesiologist, the OR nurse, and members of the surgical team. - Review next steps and relax.
Your team will describe in detail what to expect before, during and after the procedure. Don’t hesitate to ask any last minute questions!
If you’re feeling anxious or uncomfortable, our anesthesia team will be happy to provide medications when appropriate.
Immediately After Your Surgery:
– Rest and wake up slowly from general anesthesia.
If your procedure requires general anesthesia, you’ll be moved into a dedicated recovery room, called phase one. Here, an RN will spend 30-120 minutes one-on-one with you, monitoring your safe and comfortable emergence from general anesthesia. Once awake and stable, patients are taken to phase 2.
– Emerge from regional anesthesia.
If your procedure required only local or regional anesthesia, you’ll move directly into a private recovery room, called phase 2. There, you’ll be given a soft drink and light snack to settle your stomach.
– Review your discharge instructions.
All patients, along with family or friends, meet with team members in phase 2. We will cover every detail of your discharge instructions. You’ll receive written copies of these instructions, along with phone numbers for the center, the surgeon, and the anesthesiologist.
The Day After Your Surgery:*
*Or Monday, if you had a Friday procedure.
You’ll receive a follow-up from one of our RNs. He or she will gauge your post-operative course, confirm your appropriate recovery, and answer any questions that may have come up.
If concerns arise or you have any questions before or after this call, just call us directly. Your team is here for you!
